Time Period : 1900'sTheir Eyes Were Watching God takes place in the early 1900's. Like today, Social classes in the early 1900s heavily effected many aspects of life for the people of America. In April 12, 1912 1,500 people were killed, while only 800 people escaped on the life rafts. When the titanic sunk, 3% of the first class passengers drowned while 16% of second class and the 45% of the third class passengers drowned. This just shows the importance of upper-class people over lower-class people.
By 1920 the upper class which was the richest 1% of America was in possession of 40% of the entire nations wealth. 1% of the nation had almost half the nations wealth while there were people struggling to survive. There was a very clear class struggle during this time and it can be seen in the Their Eyes Were Watching God. |
